Review of JPEG image recompression detection

  • JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most widely used image format on the Internet. Previous studies have shown that many tampering operations are conducted on JPEG images. The basic operation process is to decompress the JPEG file firstly, and then tamper it in the space domain. After tampering, the tampered image will be compressed again and saved in JPEG format. In this way, the tampered image may be JPEG compressed twice or even several times. Therefore, the recompression detection result of JPEG image can be used to judge whether the image has been tampered, which is of great significance to JPEG image analysis and forensics. In this paper, we review the related literatures, and introduce some representative methods in the field of JPEG recompression detection from two aspects, i.e., the quantization table is inconsistent and remains unchanged. Finally, the existing problems in the field of JPEG recompression are analyzed, and the future development direction is prospected.
