SRO impact assessment on runway capacity

  • Increasing runway capacity by reducing wake separation was an effective way to deal with the rapid development of air traffic flow and alleviate airport congestion and delay. In analyzing the impact of wake separation reduction on runway capacity, the traditional methods ignored the effect of the SRO(Simultaneous Runway Occupation), thus causing a discrepancy between theoretical analysis and practice. In this paper, the influence of SRO on runway capacity was quantitatively evaluated, and simulation verification was carried out with the airport measured data. First, a model for calculating the probability of SRO was given. Then, the formula for calculating the impact of SRO on runway capacity under different wake separation standards was derived, and the impact of ROT(Runway Occupation Time) and LTI(Landing Time Interval) on SRO and runway capacity was further analyzed. The simulation results show that the SRO will cause a deviation of 2.95%, about the improvement of runway capacity due to wake separation reduction by aircraft reclassification. Compared with the current wake separation standard, under the new wake separation standard(FAA RECAT1.5), the SRO has a greater impact on runway capacity. The results can provide technical support for the accurate evaluation of runway capacity and the improvement of air traffic control operation efficiency.
