Single-Layer High-Order Polar-Coded Modulation System with Improved Interleaver

  • Polar codes is a new channel coding scheme, which has been adopted as a short block lengths scheme of the 5th-Generation. In this paper, a bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) system was presented based on the polar codes, and an improved interleaving algorithm was proposed to optimize the interleaver. The interleaver was proposed based on the parameters of the reliability of bit channels, and the high-reliability bit channels were interleaved with the low-reliability bit channels to assist decoding. Thereby, the error correction performance of polar codes was improved. And as the sorting operation was simple, there was no significant increase in complexity. Simulation results show that the optimized interleaver has excellent performance. Compared to the BICM system based on the Low Density Parity Check code, the BICM system based on the polar codes with the optimized interleaver has a gain of about 1.51 dB when the bit error rate is 10-5, and the code length is 256.
