On the Simulation of Vessel Navigation Noises

  • Vessel navigation noise is important signal source for passive sonar detection, target identification and artificial target classification. When fidelity requirements are satisfied, the simulated signals can be used as real samples which always fall short in both category and number. In this paper, an approach is proposed to reconstruct signals from measured ship radiated noise. Firstly, continuous spectrum, line spectrum and modulation spectrum are extracted from the measured noise by spectrum estimation. Secondly, simulated noise having similar spectrum features as the measured noise is synthesized by signal processing. Finally, the modulation parameters are adjusted according to the audition until the simulated noise satisfies the fidelity requirements in both spectrums and audition. The simulated vessel navigation noise maintains well the continuous spectrum’s peak position and spectral distribution of the measured ship radiated noise. Its modulation spectrum and audition feature also approximate to those of the measured propeller’s modulation signals. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the approach.
